The Grid Cannot Hold: AI's Insatiable Energy Appetite
The International Energy Agency projects that global data center electricity consumption will more than double by 2030, reaching over 1,000 TWh — equivalent to Japan's total electricity demand. The primary driver? Artificial intelligence.
Exponential Demand
Training a single large language model can consume as much electricity as 100 US households use in a year. But training is just the beginning. Inference — the act of using these models — requires continuous, massive compute power running 24/7 across thousands of GPU clusters worldwide.
Tech companies are responding by building dedicated power plants, including nuclear reactors, to fuel their data center ambitions. Microsoft recently reactivated Three Mile Island. Amazon purchased a nuclear-powered data center campus. Google signed the world's first corporate deal for small modular reactors.
The cloud is not powered by innovation alone. It is powered by the industrial extraction of energy from the earth.
Grid Instability
In Dublin, data centers now consume 21% of all electricity in Ireland. New residential developments have been denied grid connections because there isn't enough capacity — the data centers claimed it first.
