On Saturday, July 18, 2026, Americans from coast to coast rallied in more than 100 demonstrations nationwide against the unchecked expansion of AI data centers. New Jersey hosted two demonstrations, including one in the small borough of Kenilworth, where residents gathered outside the municipal court to push back against a proposed $1.8 billion AI data center.

A petition to halt the Kenilworth project gained over 12,000 signatures in a town of just 8,500 people. Protest signs captured the urgency: "You think this is pressure? Wait 'til there's no water pressure" and "Build community, not data centers."

Why Americans Are Pushing Back

By the end of 2025, more than 1,400 AI data centers had already been built or approved for construction in the United States, with many more proposed in 2026. • Rising electricity bills as data centers strain local grids
• Depleted water supplies in drought-prone regions

Residents have responded with petitions, packed planning meetings, and legal action. Some cities and states have paused construction or banned new data centers outright. At the federal level, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders have called for a nationwide moratorium.

A Bipartisan Movement

What makes this movement remarkable is its political breadth. While organized by Humans First—a group with conservative roots led by Amy Kremer, a former Tea Party member and Women for Trump co-founder—the opposition to data centers transcends party lines. Environmental groups, progressive lawmakers, and conservative community advocates are all sounding the alarm.

As Kremer told Business Insider: "This technology has been built on American data with American taxpayer dollars invested into these companies with American energy and American land. We have no voice in how the technology is used or how it impacts our lives, and that's not right."

The Stakes

Big tech companies are projected to spend more than $800 billion on AI infrastructure in 2026, with that figure exceeding $1 trillion in 2027. The Trump administration has backed the Stargate Project, a $500 billion initiative to build more data centers. But as this nationwide protest shows, the American public is demanding a seat at the table before the concrete is poured.

The message from July 18 was clear: communities will not be collateral in the race for AI supremacy. They want transparency, accountability, and the right to decide what gets built in their backyards.
